3 Week Update in Buenos Aires

Here is a summary of my third week in Buenos Aires. Make sure to watch the video for the funny details. More videos will be coming! Stay tuned! PS Sorry it is so long, in the future I will keep the videos 5 minutes or less.

1) My teaching english online with VIPKID schedule is now 6am-11am Mon-Fri and I got certified to teach more advanced Level 3 students, so I will need to brush up on my grammar aka learn grammar.
2) Tried to get money out of 8 different ATMs and finally found out that Visa blocked my card. So now I know I need to always check with my bank to have them check with Visa.
3) You ask what I do with all my free time? Things take so much longer when you have don’t speak the language and don’t know how things work. From the grocery store to the Pharmacy, new discoveries every day on how to do things here.
4) Transportation – One way streets, crazy driving, bikeshares breaking my heart, and riding buses.
5) My first internet outage!

Coming up:
1) More videos and posts will be coming. An apartment tour, VIPKID basics, and tourist photos/videos roundup. Stay Tuned!

First Week

This is the end of my first week living in Buenos Aires and I wanted to post a video with all the details.

Summary:

  • Shout out to Gladys who encouraged me to do a youtube channel, turns out it is the medium I am most comfortable with.
  • Google Translate has an awesome conversation feature that I highly recommend.
  • Cut down my hours teaching English online with VIPKID
  • The hardware store here was on lock down.
  • Vegetables and Fruits are sold mostly in a separate store than the supermarket.
  • Can openers are not always the same, but I am not a master at this type.
  • Yes, balcony doors do automatically lock as well and that means you can lock yourself out on your own balcony.
  • ATMS here dispense cash before returning your card, which is opposite of most of the world so many foreigners forget their cards (I did it twice.)

First 24 Hours

I wanted to post a quick video about how the first 24 hours went in Buenos Aires since so much is happening so fast. Here is a quick recap:

My apartment is awesome! The plugs are a mix of the European two prong and the Australian flat three prong. The buildings seem to be built thinner and less insulated so you can hear a lot more of the city and others.

Successes:

  • Got a sim card for my phone and it only costs $10 a month for 8gb. The cell speed here is very fast, but they do need all your info to register you before you can get a sim card.
  • Registered for their free bikeshare system, got a public transit card, and successfully grocery shopped.

Learning Experiences:

  • They go out super late on Fridays and Saturdays. Like dinner anywhere from 9pm to 1am and then clubs starting at 2am, but they don’t get peak packed until 4am. Then keeping it going till about 8am or even later.
  • Even when systems give you the option of English, it is very limited and most of the wording is still in Spanish.
  • ATMs do not always work.

A Quick Intro…

Just a quick introduction of myself, Nomadic Nick. I am a digital nomad who decided I wanted to have more freedom and time to do whatever I wanted. So I quit my job and started teaching English online so I could work less and travel more. I want to share my experiences so hopefully others who are not rich (like myself) can see how I make it work, learn from my mistakes, and hopefully be emboldened to go after their dreams. I am not sure where this adventure will take me, but you are now along for the ride!
